Ozmun Exteriors Frequently Asked Questions

Updated: Apr 28, 2022

As local Saskatoon roofing experts, we always receive questions from community members. At Ozmun Exteriors, we know that disaster can strike at any moment. We also know that the roofs of our homes and businesses will need repairs and replacements over time. When these circumstances arise, it can be challenging to know what to do next––that’s why we are here. Stick with us, and we will give you the answers to our most frequently asked questions.

What are the most common roofing problems?

  • Time Time is a factor in replacing our roofs and roofing shingles on our homes and businesses. If your roof is 20-25 years old, you may start noticing other signs that are telling you it’s time for a new roof. This is often the most manageable roofing concern to address as you can carefully budget as your roof comes to the end of its lifespan.

  • Water Damage or visible seeping Another sign that it is time for a new roof is water making its way into your house. Also, keep an eye out for a sagging roof. This means that the structure of your roof is failing, often due to damage from rotting, and needs support.

  • Moss or deterioration This is especially common in cedar shake and other natural roofing materials. Without proper maintenance, these materials begin to rot, grow mould, and become compromised. If you notice moss or mould, or any of these other issues, it’s time to call Ozmun Exteriors.

  • Missing or damaged shingles We live in a place where the weather can be extreme. From high winds to ice and snow, your roof is there to protect your home. If you notice a missing shingle or visible damage, it’s important to repair that damage as soon as possible to avoid water damage––which is a much more expensive problem.

Which roofing is best for a cold climate?

Slate, metal roofing, and fibreglass asphalt shingles are among the best roofing materials for cold weather. Slate roofing is known for its durability, especially in climates with extreme temperatures.

Metal roofing is ideal for snow and ice and, therefore, for Saskatchewan’s colder winter months. Because metal roofs are smooth, it is difficult for snow and ice to build up on the roof. This helps prevent the collection of moisture on the roof. It also helps prevent excessive weight building up on your roof, stressing your roof’s structural integrity.

Fiberglass asphalt shingles are also a popular roofing material for colder climates. Though these shingles may not be as durable or slick as slate or metal roofing, they are less expensive and a great choice for cold weather. This is why asphalt roofing shingles are among the most popularly chosen roofing materials. In addition to being great for winter, they also come in a number of colours and styles, including architectural shingles.

Does the pitch of my roof make it better for snow?

There are a few factors that make a roof good for dealing with snow and ice. Materials, like those mentioned above, are important. Another important factor is the pitch of your roof. The pitch of your roof should be at least 1 inch per foot. Snow sitting on top of a flat roof can result in the collection of moisture and excessive weight.

What’s the most common problem with roofing shingles?

The most common issue customers face with their asphalt roofing shingles is curling. The corners of the shingles begin to curl upward, becoming “dog-eared.” Shingles curl due to normal wear and tear and it is a sign that your shingles need to be replaced. When the corners of your shingles curl upwards, they leave space for water from rain, snow, and ice to damage the underlying structure of your roof. In addition, curled shingles lower the curb appeal of your home or business.
